HASTAC was founded in 2002 as a voluntary, dues-free social network with the motto: “Difference is our operating system.” This year HASTAC calls for engagement with creative and design-based approaches to technology and education, particularly around issues of social justice and allied movements of design justice, data justice and data feminism, algorithmic accountability, (digital) literacies, open knowledge, and accessibility in all its forms.
HASTAC 2023 was hosted at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NYC from June 8th to 10th, 2023. The theme, Critical Making and Social Justice, delves into the concept of critical making, emphasizing mindful attention to the processes and social context of creation and teaching. This approach challenges conventional design norms, opening theoretical space to evaluate inherent values and the impact of design. This conference fosters discussions on social justice, recognizing its multifaceted nature and interconnection with economic, racial, and environmental justice. Through scholarly endeavors, activism, and creative practices, the event aims to challenge oppressive power structures, promoting a transformative vision for a more equitable and inclusive future.
BiP team has delivered an in-person talk and workshop at HASTAC 2023, envisioning meaningful equity in the creative technology space, through participatory, feminist research-creation in embodied interfaces.
